Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Closing Date: 11th July 2025
About Somerleyton Estate
Somerleyton Estate is a pioneering 5,000-acre estate on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, at the heart of the WildEast movement to return 20% of East Anglia to nature. As a leading rewilding site, our 1000 acre rewilded landscape is alive with Highland cattle, Exmoor ponies, pigs and deer. Our work blends conservation, regenerative farming, and nature-based tourism to restore ecological balance and inspire public engagement with the natural world.
The Role: Rewilding Ranger
We are looking for a dedicated and capable Rewilding Ranger to join our growing team. This is a hands-on, varied role working across livestock management, land stewardship, and community engagement.
You’ll be a key player in managing the animals that shape our rewilded landscapes, supporting biodiversity across diverse habitats including heathland, wetlands and grassland. You’ll also play a public-facing role—communicating with visitors, volunteers, and school groups—and collaborate with expert advisors to keep our project at the forefront of nature restoration in the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Livestock Management: Daily care and monitoring of mixed livestock for ecological benefit and sustainable meat sales.
- Ecological Support: Work with specialists to maintain and enhance rewilded habitats and monitor biodiversity indicators.
- Visitor Engagement: Provide guided walks, informal interpretation and occasional events/tours for schools, guests, and the public.
- Team Collaboration: Liaise with internal and external advisors in ecology, farming, education, and tourism.
- Seasonal Flexibility: Willingness to work flexibly, with longer hours in spring/summer and shorter hours in winter.
- Presentation & Admin: Keep clear records, contribute to reports, and help maintain a tidy, well-presented estate environment.
About You
Hands-on Experience: You’ve grown up around or worked directly with livestock in an outdoor setting. You’re confident in handling animals and understand their role in ecosystem health.
- People Skills: You’re a natural communicator—calm, warm, and confident with the public. You enjoy sharing knowledge and are comfortable in a customer-facing setting.
- Organised & Proactive: You’re good at planning, keeping accurate records, and presenting information clearly.
- Collaborative Learner: You’re keen to develop your knowledge in ecology, biodiversity, and rewilding. You’re open to learning from advisors and scientists.
- Flexible & Reliable: You’re happy to work outdoors in all weather, adapt to the seasons, and do what’s needed for the animals and land.
Essential
- Previous experience with livestock or extensive rural/agricultural background
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Confident with basic admin and use of email/docs
- Willing to work outdoors year-round
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience in rewilding, conservation, or land management
- Ecological survey or biodiversity monitoring experience
- Experience of operating Tractors and farm machinery
- ATV ticket
